Ken Knight was discovered two minutes after his death. Unable to see him in the blind spot under the busted street light, another motorist had driven straight over the body.

Getting out of the car and checking, initially thinking she’d hit a dog, the seventy-nine-year-old driver had proceeded to scream so loud that she alerted the whole neighborhood. Including the lawyer’s wife.

“You’re in the clear,” Pat Hughes tells Peter over speakerphone. “They think the old woman did it. She’s already had her license revoked twice and is foggy at best around what actually happened.”

Luck has always had a hand in the art of killing.

Peter drives Paul Adams’s Saab 900 into Pacific Grove. Moonlight shines through the trees lining the streets, striping the roads in silver. He feels tranquil returning to this place. Even if his enemies are hiding in the shadows.

It is cruising past the corner of Palm Avenue and Elm Drive that his composure is broken. Ambulance lights flash blue outside the Henderson place.

He goes cold.

“Pat, I’ll have to call you back.”

Peter turns into the street, people standing about the road, and taxis the Saab slowly toward the scene. Michael Henderson lies on a stretcher that two paramedics are loading into the back of an ambulance. The kid is holding a sheet of medical gauze to one side of his face. A few feet away, Carl holds on to Kate, their pensive eyes fixed to the sight of their stricken son.

Michael looks like he’s taken a savage beating. The part of the face that Peter can see is bloated, a black eye closed over.

Mrs. Murphy stands in the street with the others, the little Yorkshire terrier, Sandy, held within an arm. She smiles at Paul Adams as he drives by.

Peter waves back.

The Hernandezes are watching from their front yard. Reaching them, Peter rolls down the window and asks Carlos what happened.

The gardener comes to the window. “That God damn Palmer kid,” he says, “beat the shit out of him and then cut his face with a knife. I got to them just in time. Pulled the little shit off him.”

Peter turns back to the scene.

Kate Henderson sobs. Carl holds her tight to his chest. He is looking over her shoulder. Up the street. Toward the corner of Elm Drive. Wrath burning in his eyes.

“Where’s Danny now?” Peter asks.

“After I got him off, he ran away.”

“Did you hurt him?”

“No.”

Peter nods. Thinks about it.

Kate Henderson gets into the ambulance. She takes her son’s hand right as the doors slam shut.
